Raise awareness among festival and cultural event organizers
The first goal of Rwandan Safe Events website and campaign is to raise awareness among organizers of festivals and other cultural events: by using the events they organize as a step towards change, we can reach a young audience that is particularly exposed.
The aim is to convince them of the importance of promoting gender equality and consent, and combating harassment and gender-based violence in their venues and events.
By taking proactive steps to ensure safety and promote a culture of respect, event organizers demonstrate that they are responsible and attentive to the needs of their audiences. This increases the trust and loyalty of attendees to their events, who are more likely to return and recommend events where they feel safe and respected.
The role of the website is therefore to convince organizers that by including a Safe Zone in their events, or promoting policies against gender-based violence or harassment, they can have a lasting and positive impact on society.
It’s also about reminding them that they have a legal and moral responsibility as organizers of public events, and that a proactive approach to these issues can make their jobs easier.

Help Organizers Get Started
Safe Zones help foster a culture of respect and inclusion. By creating spaces where abusive behavior is prohibited, festivals, nightclubs and concerts send a strong message against violence and harassment.
These zones, which serve as information and support centers, also promote gender equality, healthy relationships and consent, and raise awareness about gender-based violence, especially among the young majority audience.
To get started, to create their first Safe Zone, organizers need help.
One of the goals of this website is to provide them with the resources they need:
- Explanations and F.A.Q.
- Examples of Safe Space Policies to be implemented
- Documentation on how to set up a Safe Zone
- Training materials and resources
- Documentation on GBV, harassment and consent for teams, volunteers, and artists
- Posters, flyers and communication materials to download for free
- …
The idea is to make it as easy as possible to make the transition to positive practices.
While creating a Safe Zone may not be appropriate for every type of event or venue, educating staff and displaying awareness posters for attendees is an easy way to start.
